Breaking Free from Fitness Dogma: Embracing a Holistic Approach to Personal Training in Taipei

In the ever-evolving world of fitness, one of the most significant challenges both trainers and clients face is the prevalence of dogmatism and rigid adherence to specific training camps. This mindset often limits growth, learning, and ultimately, the results we can achieve. It’s time to shine a light on the importance of embracing a variety of approaches and focusing on self-growth as coaches to better serve our clients.

The Problem with Fitness Camps


Many trainers fall into the trap of sticking solely to what has worked for them personally. This narrow focus can lead to a stagnant skill set and the inability to effectively help a diverse range of clients. We've all seen influencers who market themselves based on their success stories. While their achievements are commendable, their approach often lacks the breadth needed to address the unique needs of different individuals.


The fitness world is filled with various "camps," each claiming to have the best method. Powerlifters swear by the squat, bench, and deadlift; weightlifters focus on Olympic lifts; calisthenics enthusiasts champion bodyweight exercises; bodybuilders chase the pump. While each method has its merits, clinging to one exclusive approach can overlook the potential benefits of others. Smart trainers understand the importance of versatility and adaptability, using a range of modalities to address the specific needs and goals of their clients.


Adopting a Holistic Approach


To truly excel as trainers, we must move away from one-size-fits-all solutions and instead adopt a more holistic, client-centered approach. This involves continuously expanding our knowledge and skills, and being open to learning from different training philosophies. For instance, my own experience spans various areas—training for rowing, classical power lifts, bodybuilding, and kettlebell work. More recently, I’ve embraced working with tools like mace bells and club bells to develop shoulder and rotational strength and mobility, which are especially beneficial for activities I am passionate about like fly fishing. Each of these disciplines has enriched my ability to help clients achieve their goals in unique ways.


Embracing Self-Growth as Coaches


The journey of self-growth as a coach is an ongoing process. It requires humility, curiosity, and the willingness to step out of our comfort zones. By exploring new training methods and staying updated with the latest research, we can offer our clients a more comprehensive and effective training experience. This doesn't mean we should abandon our core competencies but rather integrate new insights and techniques to enhance our existing knowledge.


Fostering an Inclusive Fitness Community


As trainers, we have a responsibility to foster an inclusive and supportive fitness community. This means encouraging open-mindedness and collaboration rather than competition and division. By acknowledging the strengths and limitations of different training approaches, we can create a more balanced and effective training environment. For example, critically evaluating new methods can help us adopt useful techniques while discarding what doesn’t serve our clients’ best interests.
